Laura Benningfield, Director of Schools for Taylor County Schools, received the TC Leadership Award during a regular meeting of the Taylor County School Board in June 2022.
She announced her retirement at the end of the school year and finished her last week on the job on June 17.
“I had to call her today and tell her that I’m already in different meetings where I missed her,” Charles Higdon Jr., superintendent, said during the meeting.
He also intends to send her home with the stool in his office, which he bought from CK-Prep so she would have her own chair to sit in each time she stopped by to talk about the variety of opportunities and challenges facing the district over the past few years.
“We would have four or five people sitting in front of my desk with her in that chair off to the side, and I got to see her solving so many problems in her head. We made a great team,” he reminisced. “I appreciate you, and I’m gonna miss having you in that chair.”
“Life has taught me to never pass up a moment to say you appreciate someone, and Mrs. Benningfield, I appreciate you,” David Hall, school board chairman, said. “There have been so many times where I’ve sent you little notes via email and I would always get such a quick, thoughtful response. Thank you for your attention to detail, which complemented Mr. Higdon’s zeal and energy, and for the blessing you have been to us and to all of this district.”
The award was presented to Mrs. Benningfield by T.J. Raikes, school board member.
